The Honda HR-V had a new generation in the European and Asian markets, and many speculated about the model to come to North America. Now, we have an original model with all-new features.

Check out the reworked platform and styling inside and out, as well as the powertrain options for the upcoming 2023 Honda HR-V.

Honda HR-V 2023 on a New Platform

Among the few pieces of information that Honda has confirmed, we know that the new model will no longer be based on the Honda Fit platform, but of course on the latest Honda Civic. Concretely, in terms of dimensions, we will have:

  • A longer wheelbase
  • A wider stance Increased
  • interior clearance

We can also expect even more cargo capacity. For example, the current model has a trunk capacity of 688L and a maximum cargo volume of 1,665L. The new dimensions will have the advantage of making it even more competitive in the segment.

"This HR-V gains in size, which will allow it to better position itself against new competitors like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Volkswagen Taos."

Completely Renewed Exterior

The first thing that strikes you when you see the images of the new HR-V is its new style, which is completely different from the one we know. Its shape is much sportier and modern. Notable changes include:

  • A new front grille with a honeycomb pattern

  • A longer hood

  • A rear spoiler

  • A new style of wheels

Since style is an important selection criterion when choosing a vehicle, this one should attract more consumers than its predecessor.

From a purely practical standpoint, notice that the rear seat handles have been moved from the window sills to a more traditional position on the doors.

Honda HR-V Interior: Inspired by the Civic

Comfort and space have always been a priority with this Honda model, and that will remain the case. Most importantly, we'll get an updated SUV, which will carry over many elements from the last generation Civic, especially in terms of the dashboard and the infotainment system.

Speaking of technology, there will be familiar systems like the Honda Sensing driver assistance package with its many safety features. Front, blind spot and rear obstacle warnings, automatic emergency braking and cruise control will certainly be part of the package.

As mentioned, the Honda HR-V interior will also be more spacious, both for passengers and for the trunk, although exact figures are not yet available.

Engine Still Unknown

For now, all we know is that the new SUV will offer more power. That's great news, considering that the current Honda HR-V reviews often complain about the engine's lack of life. Remember that this first-generation model is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine that develops 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque.

As often happens with the announcement of a partially revealed new model, there are some plausible rumors. Since the 2023 HR-V will be based on the same platform as the Civic, it's safe to assume that it will feature the same engine.

The 158-horsepower 2.0L 4-cylinder could well be at the heart of the new SUV. Will the 2.5L turbo engine also be available? For reference, here are the current performances of these engines on the Civic:

Civic Power Couple
2.0 L 4 cyl. 158 horsepower 138 lb-ft
Turbo 1.5 L 4-cylinder 180 horsepower 177 lb-ft

Will there be a hybrid version? We should know more in the near future. What is certain is that the driving experience will be enhanced, especially with a new independent rear suspension.

For now, details on the powertrain and the next-generation Honda HR-V price remain under wraps. However, it shouldn't be long before production of the model begins this summer.
