While we are now at the 9th generation of the Honda Accord, it would be interesting to make a little journey in time to see how this small hatchback originally made its debut in 1976 and has become the benchmark for the sedan due to its composition, setting standards in terms of manufacturing quality in the industry. Lombardi Honda in Montreal, near Laval, the South Shore and the North Shore brings you back in time to witness the evolution of this little gem.
1st Generation: 1976 to 1981
This Japanese car company tried to think outside the box by innovating something new while continuing to develop its small Civic. This novelty is the Honda Accord. Honda wanted to make this car a "perfect match between people, society and the car by privileging advanced technology", thus the name Honda Accord. The launch of this type of vehicle marks, in the history of Honda, the beginning of its upmarket positioning. Available only in the form of a tailgate compact and two doors at the beginning, the sedan version with four doors only appeared in 1979. With only 68 hp, the car was not very efficient, but thanks to its weight of less than 920 kg, its weight / power ratio was already better than that of the American cars of the same range at the time.
2nd Generation: 1982 to 1985
Due to the great success of the first generation, Honda had no reason to let this business opportunity go. The second generation of the Honda Accord was launched in the fall of 1981, with a longer wheelbase and a completely redesigned exterior. In 1984, Honda finally decided to change the type of cylinder of the engine, so it now reaches 1830 cc, which means that the power of the car reaches up to 86 hp. In recognition of the success of this car in North America, Honda decided to produce its cars in the United States in 1982, a first for a Japanese manufacturer.
3rd Generation: 1986 to 1989
For the third generation of the Honda Accord, the company focus on the choice of additional options: DX, LX and LXi versions with 3 or 4 doors were available. Thanks to double-wishbone suspensions, this car had a much superior handling than other similar cars on the market at the time. More and more powerful, the third generation of the Honda Accord reached 98 hp for the carburetor-fed version and 110 hp for the injection version. A two-door coupe version of the Honda Accord was introduced in 1988.
4th Generation: 1990 to 1993
Novelties on the 4th generation of the Honda Accord was less striking, apart from the use of a new type of body and a four-cylinder engine developing 130 hp, everything was relatively similar to its previous generation.
5th Generation: 1994 to 1997
Unlike the changes made during the 4th generation, Honda decided to focus this time on the mechanical aspect of the car: it introduced the VTEC system with variable valve timing. There is also the arrival of a brand new engine in 1995, a 2.7-liter V6 engine developing 170 hp.
6th Generation: 1998 to 2002
During this period, the Camry and other family cars of the same range were threatening the sales of the Honda Accord, so it was mandatory for Honda to develop more attractive features than simply redesigning the body, like what it did on the previous generation. From that moment on, the Honda Accord is equipped with a four-cylinder engine of 2.3 litres or a V6 engine of 3.0 litres. The body of the coupe and the sedan has a more modern touch. In 2000, a special edition of the Sedan Accord successfully met California's SULEV standards, the world's strictest applicable standards in the industry, a first for a vehicle with an internal combustion engine.
7th Generation: 2003 to 2007
Although there was almost no change in the bodywork, the engine of the 7th generation is powered by a more powerful 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine developing 160 hp and a 3.0-liter V6 engine developing 240 hp. A navigation system was available as an option.
8th Generation: 2008 to 2013
The 8th generation of the Honda Accord has not undergone major changes. The American version only had gasoline engines of 4 and 6 cylinders, while the Japanese version could be equipped with a diesel engine.
9th Generation: 2013 to now
The 9th generation of the Honda Accord is marked by the arrival of a hybrid version, the production of which began in 2013, featuring a 320 hp V6 engine and a 40kw electric motor in the rear axle.
