2022 Honda Civic Hatchback: A Force of Nature

The Civic lineup unveiling is in full swing this year. Already, we've been treated to two of the four main models soon on offer: the sedan and the hatchback.

In the case of the latter, the introduction was done recently, and the product will arrive in dealerships early this fall. At first glance, we're dealing with a proposal that promises a sensational arrival on the market, not only because the offer is very complete, but also because versatility and style are at the forefront of the equation.

Three Versions to Suit You!

The Civic hatchback is offered in three trim levels: LX, Sport and Sport Touring. The former will come with the Civic's base engine, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Previously, only one unit powered the 5-door variant.

The second engine, standard on the Sport and Sport Touring models, is another proven performer. The 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that was already powering these models is a true force of nature. With 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, it delivers lively shifts and is always on the ready to show what it's capable of.

A Manual Transmission at the Rendezvous

For a moment, some people feared that Honda would no longer offer its manual transmission with the Civic, as it has been withdrawn from the offer for the 2022 sedan version. However, everyone was reassured because the hatchback model will continue to boast a manual transmission that can be paired with either of the engines.

Otherwise, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) dances with the mills, resulting in reduced fuel consumption (official figures to come).

Versatility

Of course, the great thing about this version is its incredible versatility. Once the tailgate is up (and it's lighter than ever), you'll find a spacious environment that can accommodate whatever you wish to cram into it, whether it's behind the two rows of seats up, or behind the first row with the bench seat down. Total volume figures are pending, but we do know that the trunk is around 700 litres, which is exceptional. The Civic Hatchback sets the standard for practicality in its segment.

Inside, Honda has gone to great lengths to present us with an environment that is not only quality, but also hyper-friendly. Throughout the design process of the Civic, focus was placed on the human factor in order to provide a satisfying sensory experience at the controls. As with the sedan version, the manufacturer has hit the target perfectly.

Regarding seating, the seats have been redesigned to offer even more comfort than before. With the Sport Touring, the seats will offer increased lateral support, which is always nice when driving a sportier model. In the back, occupants will enjoy 36 mm more legroom.

As for the equipment, the base version will, of course, deliver all the necessities, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps. The size of the multimedia system screen is going to be seven or nine inches, depending on the variant. At the top of the hierarchy, a highly configurable digital display instrument cluster awaits you, as does a 12-speaker Bose audio system.

A Well-Thought-Out Vehicle

Behind the wheel, we can expect something very convincing. The sedan version has already given us a pretty good idea of the incredible work done on the Civic. Yet, the hatchback has received even more attention, as it's the sportiest solution in the lineup (not to mention the upcoming Si and Type R variants that will follow). Compared to the 4-door, stiffness in terms of torsion will be increased by 19% instead of 13%. In short, we can't wait to get behind the wheel!
